Millions of dollars have been poured into mind-body research over the last several decades. The conclusion that depression, anxiety, or stress causes a list of ailments has been proven. The Medical Community
James Gordon is a Clinical Professor at Georgetown University, as well as founder and director of the Center for Mind–Body Medicine Institute at Harvard University. He began his mind-body analysis in the mid-1970s. His first book was met with great speculation by both the medical and scholastic community. But now, the validity of his work has resulted in the necessity of application. In other words, the general public is aware that there is a connection between mind and body. Consequently, we are more comfortable pursuing these findings, rather than taking prescription drugs.
A growing number of medical schools are including mind–body medicine in their curriculum. More importantly, holistic practitioners are becoming more prevalent. Likewise, mind-body books and meditations have become a multi-million dollar industry. This is a growing field of study that has also been acknowledged with government funding.
National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)
The NCCIH was developed in October 1992 by the federal government with a 2 million dollar starting budget. As of 2019, that budget has ballooned to $146.5 million. The mission of this institution is to “define, through rigorous scientific investigation, the usefulness and safety of complementary and integrative interventions and their roles in improving health and health care.”
Essentially, the NCCIH is working to discover how our mental health and our biological health intersect. They also find non-prescription options for pain and ailments that have been treated thus far with prescription drugs—often unsuccessfully.
