Optimal Sleep with CBD

Sleep affects everything: mood, energy level and of course, productivity. We all need it, even though there are a few souls who can get by on a mere four or five hours a night. I’m not sure who they are, but I know I’m not one of them! If I don’t get at least eight hours a night, I’m not performing at maximum capacity. And I prefer nine. I’ve recently found my optimal sleep with CBD.

Today I would like to share a personal story with you. If you’ve been following our blog, you know that I began using CBD full-spectrum drops several months ago. My overall well-being has definitely improved. I’ve suffered from sleeplessness, night terrors and anxiety for most of my life. I believe that these symptoms were a result of a traumatic event in my childhood.

I was introduced to CBD as a result of my employment. As I work for a Wellness company that carries skincare products, drops and ingestibles, many of which contain CBD, I was allowed to try them for free. (Lucky me!) This opportunity afforded me a gift I may never have found otherwise. And boy, am I grateful for it.

“Sleepy-time” meds

As I began to research the benefits of CBD, I found that many of my own issues could be addressed. One of our Wellness coaches walked me through my symptoms, possible courses of action, and how CBD might help. It turns out CBD can be particularly beneficial for those suffering from anxiety or depression, as well as sleeplessness. I was excited to try it, but wanted to start slow.

I began taking a few drops at night before I went to sleep. I had been taking two 25 mg antihistamine tablets at night for over fifteen years. I refer to them as “sleepy-time.” I didn’t realize that I was taking a decongestant. They were labeled a generic sleep aid.

This “sleepy-time” is an over the counter medication that does not require a prescription. It is supposed to be non-addictive. However, soon after beginning to take it, I realized I could no longer fall asleep without it – much less sleep through the night.

Up until now, my only option, other than a prescription with intense side effects, was this local drug store medication. Because sleep is such an important part of our health, I knew I had to make it a priority. Thus far, this was the best solution I found that worked for me. Melatonin just didn’t do the trick.

CBD for sleep

The first night I tried the CBD drops, I was both stunned and excited. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I didn’t have to take my “sleepy-time” tablets to doze off. Moreover, I slept through the night without waking up once. It gets better. I woke up … refreshed. No need for caffeine or any stimulant to help me get moving. It was perfect.

Is this for real? The CBD I take is derived from industrial hemp. Industrial hemp, unlike marijuana, won’t get you “high.” Yet, it relaxes you and takes away the day-to-day angst that so many of us have. Life can be stressful. If I can find a natural option to help me sleep and even feel content or more relaxed, then I’m all about it.

Optimal sleep with CBD conclusion

Now, I’ve been taking full spectrum CBD drops for four months. I noticed about a week after I started taking them and ceased the “sleepy time”, that I became congested. I also started sneezing a lot. Fortunately, my roommate is a doctor. She informed me that the decongestant I had been taking for so long would have to be weaned off of.

Needless to say, I was disappointed to hear this. I hate taking anything I don’t need to. Now, a daily dose of antihistamine over a 15 year period, (that I didn’t know I was taking), has lowered my natural tolerance to the world around me. I’ve never had a problem with allergies until now. I was ignorant of what the ingredient was in my “sleepy time.”

Moving forward, I want to be well educated of what I am ingesting. I want to do what is good for my body and my health, so that I can live my best life. Likewise, because I know my employer uses third party testing, and our products do not contain THC, I can be confident in using CBD.

I’m not sure how long it will take me to completely wean off of the decongestant (“sleepy-time”). For now, I can go every other night with only one. (The regular dose is two 25 mg tablets.) I will continue to test and stretch out the doses until I can come completely off of it. But the good news is … I’ve found a natural product with no side effects that helps more than just my sleeplessness. Life is good.
